Developed from "detection dog training" (bomb and drug dogs) K9 Nose Work teaches a dog to use his nose to find a specific scent or odor (birch, anise, and clove) on cue. Dogs learn to search indoor rooms, parks and building exteriors, vehicles and containers. Using their nose is highly rewarding. Dogs are masters at sniffing things out. We teach them to find these specific odors and alert their handler when they do.
Any dog can learn and excel in Canine Nose Work. It is especially good for fearful and reactive dogs as only one dog works at a time in class. Dogs that may have a hard time in a large group class environment thrive in Nose Work class. Owners learn a new way to channel their dog's excessive energy, while their dog gains confidence and has lots of fun! Dogs learn to ignore environmental stressors and concentrate on the puzzle at hand. A dog who is often fearful of a new room and strange people can focus on his search confidently.
